At the southern tip of Fanø lies Sønderho with its almost 300 houses and approx. 340 year-round residents. The city is well protected from wind and water behind dunes to the west and south and behind green dykes to the north and east. The town's houses are almost all facing the sun - or rather "wind" - with the gables in the east and west, surrounded by small gardens and open green areas. A network of narrow paths and small crooked roads branches out between the plots, as if in a labyrinth.
Sønderho is rightly called a cultural gem with the many listed buildings. The buildings in Sønderho are distinctive and the construction method is stubbornly maintained. "Modern" houses have been built in the city, but the traditional fan houses still have the greatest appeal. The modern technology such as an excellent internet connection means that you can easily settle in Sønderho and still have a working life that extends beyond the island. Sønderho Borgerforening works to preserve Sønderho as a living community, however, rooted in old traditions.
