Bird life on Fanø

Distance: 3.75 Km

The different habitats of the Wadden Sea for animals and plants each have their special significance for breeding and migrating waterfowl.

For more than 50 species of waterfowl, the Wadden Sea is of crucial importance. It is estimated that more than 10 million individuals pass the Wadden Sea during the current.

The bird nests on Fanø
The bird nests on Fanø are a special piece of cultural history and a nature experience, which is not found in many places in Denmark.

A bird's nest is a larger trapped trap - consisting of a pond with hunting canals - intended for catching wild ducks. As the only place in Denmark, four bird nests were built on Fanø.

Elbow bird's eye
Located in a scenic and protected area next to Elbow Bay. It functions today as a working museum. Elbow Bird's Nest is privately owned and usually closed in the winter.

Sønderho Old Bird Bunk
Just been put in order. A permanent exhibition has been established that tells about the bird nests, nature and bird life. From the bird tower there is a fantastic view of the Wadden Sea. The birdhouse is open daily to the public all year round. (Remember to close the gate after you). Free access.

Dry pads
At low tide, when the waders are drying up, the fertile areas of thousands of waders are sought out, e.g. common grebe, Icelandic grebe and small copper snapper as well as several species of mallards and geese. The birds "refuel" before the journey to the breeding areas in northern Scandinavia, Siberia and Greenland or en route to the wintering sites further south.

The large mussel banks in the Wadden Sea are an important food resource for, among other things, eider and beach damage. Inland areas and localities behind the dikes are also of great importance as a 'pantry' for gray duck, pipe duck and tip sand, as well as for short-billed goose, snout goose and bramble goose.

nightjar
The night raven is in many ways reminiscent of an owl that is active at night. One cannot see it, but hear its characteristic growl or hum. The best chances to experience the night raven are in Fanø Klitplantage on warm evenings in May, June and July. From around sunset and a few hours ahead.

Meet nature on Fanø
Out in nature, "meeting" is the most important thing. The encounter with animals, plants, natural phenomena, landscapes and with the other people who move in nature. The meeting creates the nature experience.
