Over the past 100 years, Fanø has experienced a large influx of visual artists who took up more or less permanent residence on the island. The environment, the motifs and the fine light have had a particularly attractive effect on the painters.

The museum's collection is mainly built around Danish, German and Swedish artists. Changing exhibitions are held, but the main purpose is to show the art of painting that has described the Wadden Sea - past and present.
